Basic Golf Clubs and Ranges

Starting to take up the sport of golf can be overwhelming and the number of products that companies sell to “improve your game” can become expensive if you’re not careful.  Beside the necessity of needing a golf glove, you also have to purchase clubs and other gear but you don’t have to go out and buy an extravagant set of clubs to start.  Here we will show you how to start and upgrade your golf gear collection so that you’ll be swinging like a pro in no time.

Basic Golf Clubs and RangesFirst, I would suggest that you start with 3-wood, a wedge and a putter.  These three clubs will serve you well as a novice because they will help you develop the range and driving distance needed to get your ball down the golf course.  Once you’ve gotten in the rhythm of those three, add a driver, 5-iron, and 7-iron to the mix because these will help you increase your skill level.  With the basics in place, you can start building the rest of your collection as you see fit.  One of the most important rules of thumb in golf is to have a maximum of 14 clubs in your bag, so keep your buying limited.  As you grow out of clubs, you can find stores that buy or trade clubs which will help to keep expenses in check.  As an amateur, there’s no need to buy thousands of dollars’ worth of clubs until you have developed your swing and gotten to know what suits you.

The distance that you hit the ball depends on technique, height, and strength.  Below is a chart that names each club and the average range that you can hit a ball with them.  In your research you may find other similar charts on the internet with varying distance ranges but we find this one to be most accurate. Enjoy!
